There are a few popular Pittsburgh-area shelters where you can adopt pets, including Animal Friends along Camp Horne Road in Ohio Township and the Animal Rescue League along Hamilton Avenue in Larimer. Animal Friends goes on Life-Saving Mission

More than 50 animals were rescued from being euthanized and will go up for adoption Monday.

Animal Friends continued a 15-year New Year's Eve tradition this weekend as staff members and volunteers traveled around the area rescuing animals that otherwise would be euthanized by the end of the year. The New Year's Rescue involved transferring animals from animal control facilities and other shelters to the Animal Friends shelter in Ohio Township, where the animals receive appropriate care. The volunteers saved animals from shelters around Allegheny, Greene, Washington and Westmorland counties. Each rescued animal was vaccinated, bathed, groomed, evaluated medically and behaviorally, and spayed or neutered. Aside from being treated to a primping session, these animals are given another chance at life. Friday's New Year's Eve Rescue …

Lost Dog Finds a New Home

Stray found last month in Mt. Lebanon was adopted this week.

The owner of a 4-year-old stray found last month in Mt. Lebanon was never located, but the dog has a new forever home. The white dog with black spots was found in Mt. Lebanon on July 10 and taken to Clair’s Kennel near Upper St. Clair’s Municipal Building as workers tried to locate the owner. The kennel held the dog for 48 hours before handing him over to the Animal Rescue League of Pittsburgh. A worker at the East Liberty shelter on Wednesday said he was adopted a few days ago and now has a new forever home. Roy Hayward, a county animal control officer, said their Lost Pet Project works to locate the animal’s owner before turning them over to the Animal Rescue League, Animal Friend or the Humane Society. “Without their help, we would have…

Stray Dogs Looking For Good Homes

Animal Friends visited Hop House to promote adoptions.

Animal Friends stopped by the Hop House in Green Tree on Wednesday night to raise money for the shelter and introduce the public to a few dogs in need of a permanent and loving home. The $5 donation gave customers a free appetizer and a small pizza. Quite a few loving animals were at the Hop House looking for new homes or just happy to be given a little attention. Protect Your Furry Friends During the Heatwave

Animals Friends issues tips to keep your dog and cat safe in the heat.

As the temperature and humidity rise today and during the heat wave this week, Animal Friends is urging people not to forget about their furry, four-legged friends. Animal Friend’s most obvious and simplest warning: “Never leave your pet in a parked car!” No matter how much your dog loves riding in the car with you, leave him at home. Temperatures Rising One of our sister Patch.com sites did an experiment in a public parking lot. In the first step of the experiment, the car was left closed for an hour – outside temperature was 83 degrees, inside the car was 108. On an 85-degree day, it takes just 10 minutes for a closed car to reach 102 degrees and 30 minutes to reach 120 degrees, said Jolene Miklas, director of communications at Animal …

Patch Pets: Meet Robyn

This lovable 4-year-old beagle-mix at Animal Friends is looking for a good home.

Robyn came to Animal Friends with a sad story. This 4-year-old beagle-mix was found all alone living in a high school parking lot. She is a sweet and loving girl who wants nothing more than to find a forever home where she can learn what it is like to be a cherished canine member of the family. Despite her past, Robyn still loves to be around people. When she arrived at the shelter she had a difficult time adjusting to kennel life and spent time in a foster home. Once she settled in there she loved living the life of a family pet and adjusted very well. She gets along well with other dogs, but it is recommended that she be adopted into a home that doesn't have cats. Robyn was part of an Animal Friends field trip to North Park where her …
