The projected millage rate when this all started was going to be around 14.72, I'm sure your notRead More talking the 5 % windfall. Correct ? The reassessment was to MAKE it FAIR across the board not pay more...Just wait Washington County, you can thank your school districts. The 16.145 is too high !!! Get involved with true property tax relief, eliminated them forever www.ptcc.us

The numbers in the article are the numbers discussed during the school board meeting - I did notRead More calculate them myself. There is a public meeting on May 28 where you could voice your concerns to the board.

I agree. The amount is still too high, given the large amount they already have stashed away fromRead More last year's unnecessary tax hike. New Board members, it's time to clean house.

I am a newer resident to PA and was disappointed to be turned away from voting in the primaryRead More because I am registered as an independent. My interests were voting for school board...political affiliation should have nothing to do with this.
Charles Addleman May 23, 2013 at 06:50 pm
THIS IS ONLY THE PRELIMINARY. YOU CAN VOTE WHEN IT COUNTS IN NOVEMBER.

WHY VOTE FOR JEFF CHOURA? SOMEBODY PLEASE GIVE A REASON.
Char Valley Citizen May 20, 2013 at 09:25 pm
On Tuesday evening, the Char Valley community will learn if people really care about school districtRead More performance. Most people don't vote in non presidential elections. We will find out if our community cares enough to go vote. If people care, they will find a way in their busy day to go vote. If they don't care, they will have a million reasons why they couldn't get to the polls to vote. The lack of caring, the lack of interest, the lack of involvement are what has led South Fayette to be ranked #1 and CV to be way down the list.

Is anyone concerned that a school board director's son is announced as a football coach at CV.Read More Aren't there rules about this type of favoritism
Caitlin April 26, 2013 at 02:47 pm
I wouldn't take this list too seriously. Pittsburgh CAPA 6-12 made the the Top 20. Having experienceRead More with multiple students from multiple schools, I know from experience that CAPA students are not academically proficient, compared to CV kids. I'm assuming that the broad range of demographics in some of these schools, is what ultimately kept CV off.
Denise April 26, 2013 at 11:09 pm
http://paayp.emetric.net/District/SchoolList/c2/103021752 This needs to be taken seriously. We areRead More falling behind as a district. CAPA made AYP across the board last year, Chartiers Valley did not. Apparently our students are not academically proficient, either. Our kids spend too much time on their cell phones during school hours, and they are falling behind other districts. About 1/3 are taking AP exams, and but what about the other 2/3? As for a broad range of demographics, CAPA is in the City of Pittsburgh and draws students from all over the city. Racially, they are far more diverse than Chartiers Valley. I would wager that they also experience a much wider range of incomes since the student pool is much larger. It is easy to bury our heads in the sand and say this survey is wrong, but our district is not the district I moved into more than a decade ago. It seems like they are worried about window dressing - computers for all high school kids, bullying problems, etc, but that the actual building blocks of education are no longer as sound as they once were. It definitely bears deeper examination.
Denise April 26, 2013 at 11:22 pm
I actually meant to write bullying programs rather than bullying problems.

After reading previous articles on this subject I can only conclude that this is because their areRead More to many people in the district that have nothing better to do than complain. I am so happy my children will never go there. It was a terrible school when I went there, sadly the stuck up crowd made it worse. I'm sad for those girls :(
Amy April 26, 2013 at 12:45 pm
Keep an eye on who the next coach "knows" in the administration... I wouldn't put it pastRead More CV to do something like that.
Debbie Minnis-Regan April 26, 2013 at 05:20 pm
Amy, you are so dead-on. CV is all about who you know. It's a shame.

I have lived in Pennsylvania for almost 14 years & I used to say, "I'm so glad this stateRead More doesn't administer the graduation exams." Unfortunately, the state of Pennsylvania will join the other ranks of so many other states by introducing special exams beginning with all tenth graders. If students do not pass these exams by their senior year, they will not be allowed to graduate. This change will happen as early as 2015. I am from the state of Ohio & these exams were introduced over twenty years ago. I remember hearing stories of students who couldn't pass these exams & subsequently had to get a G.E.D. to graduate. How sad that so many years of had work will now come down to passing one test just to receive a diploma. I was told by my own district administrators, that this change involves every public school district within the state of Pennsylvania. Tax payers must attend school board meetings within their district to educate themselves of such changes so we aren't blindsided when things like this occur. It is also imperative to attend these meetings to voice our concerns over standardized testing & how a 'successful adult it does not make'.

That is absolutely ridiculous! I have NEVER used the information I was "tested" on in theRead More real world. These tess are a waste of the students/teachers time and tax payers money. There is no reason a test should determine who graduates or not. If this was the case when I was in school I would not have graduated. I am very intellegent however, when it comes to taking tests I fall short. Many children can be honor students but are horrible test takers, and for that they will be warranted as "not smart enough" to graduate. I'm so glad our presidents "no child left behind" is working so well. Let's see how many children get left behind because they cannot pass a test!

Anybody wanting to understand this information more completely should go to the PBT web site andRead More review the entire list. What is reported here, as well as other local districts, is DISTRICT rankings. The report includes not just DISTRICT rankings, but rankings for several grade levels. While some DISTRICTS report a high ranking, some of the GRADE level rankings are lower. The reverse is also true -- some GRADE levels are high, but DISTRICT rankings are lower. In some cases, there is a wide range within a district. The list contains 104 districts. While it is commendable that some of the local districts, such as Mt Lebanon, USC, South Fayette, Peters, etc have a high district ranking, other districts in the area are at the bottom. These include Duquesne, Clariton, Wilkinsburg, and Aliquippa. The range of rankings is very wide for geographical locations being very close. These rankings are based upon PSSA tests. These are tests that some parents are choosing to opt out for 2013. Some do not want their child-student to be taking these tests. 95% of the students in a district need to take the test for a district to be valid for evaluation, and some districts are in trouble of having enough students taking the tests.

Honestly, I think school is what your child is willing to make of it. There are fantastic teachersRead More within any district as well as some that need a little work. If you really want a great education, the knowledge is out there for you to receive. Successful people come from all sorts of backgrounds. I think this list just reflects which districts have the most at-home cooperation which is something we can all do no matter where we live.

what area of Bridgeville was this in?
Mike Jones (Editor) March 17, 2013 at 01:32 pm
@Lorie... I'm not exactly sure of the streets, but I think it's closer to the Upper St. Clair borderRead More because Bridgeville also sent this alert to USC School District. The chief told me the van situation is not overly suspicious because the driver never attempted to make contact. But the two incidents happened so close together, he wanted the public to be aware and vigilant.
