Roadwork Can’t Stop MDA Fundraiser

Kirwan Heights firefighters spent Aug. 27 collecting money for MDA.

At first, a few motorists thought the men in florescent safety vests were road construction workers panhandling for PennDOT.

But in reality, they were standing near a construction zone along Route 50 and collecting money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

“We battled the traffic and construction a little bit,” fire Chief Mark Lewis said. “It was tough with the construction.”

The firefighters standing near the Neville House had to deal with construction and single-lane traffic as crews worked near . Lewis said a few drivers thought they were construction workers trying to help the cash-strapped state.

“No, this is for Jerry’s kids,” Lewis would tell the drivers. “We do it for the kids. We don’t do it for ourselves.”

A couple dozen Kirwan Heights firefighters from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Aug. 27 and collected about $4,200 for MDA. Lewis said they’ve collected well over $20,000 in the five years of the “Fill The Boot” drive.
