Towns Get Into Spring-Cleaning Spirit

Scott, Heidelberg and Collier are each holding clean-up events on Saturday.

Spring is in the air and three local towns are getting into the cleaning act Saturday morning.

Scott Township, Heidelberg and Collier Township all are planning cleanup and litter removal drives to beautify their neighborhoods. Bridgeville will hold a similar event on April 30.

Last year’s drive in Scott Township brought about 30 volunteers and helped remove litter and other debris that had accumulated along some of its most heavily traveled roads.

Just down the road, residents of Heidelberg will be doing the same type of work. The 4th annual “Let’s Redd Up Heidelberg” event begins at 8:30 a.m. at the Ellsworth Avenue Playground.

Borough Manager Joe Kauer said the volunteers will remove graffiti, plant trees and do other “earth-friendly chores.” Each volunteer will be provided safety gear and should wear appropriate clothing.

The borough will also place large Dumpsters on Third Street beside the Ellsworth playground and next to the Zero St. Tot-lot at Heidelberg Park for people do dispose of waste. Items that are not allowed to be thrown into the Dumpsters include tires, Freon, liquid paint, car parts and other hazardous materials.

To volunteer for Heidelberg’s cleanup, contact Kauer at 412-276-0363 or JKauer@HeidelbergBorough.com.

Meanwhile, Collier Township will be holding its 5th annual “Keep Collier Beautiful Clean-up” event from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Volunteers will meet at the on Hilltop Road and receive safety equipment and instructions before heading out.

Those interested in attending must register by contacting Bob Caun at 412-279-2525 or bcaun@colliertwp.net. Lunch and a raffle drawing will occur after the cleanup.
