Kids Lauded for Lemonade Stand Donations

Scott Township kids receive praise from Board of Commissioners

Five children from Scott Township were commended Tuesday night for donating the proceeds from their summer lemonade stands to the municipality's library fund and fireworks display.

The children each received a proclamation during the Board of Commissioners monthly workshop meeting that praised them for the selfless gestures.

As J.R. Figura and his cousin, Austin Camp, sheepishly walked away from the board after receiving their proclamations, 3-year-old Austin showed a streak of confidence and slapped hands with Commissioner Bill Wells.

J.R., 8, and Austin set up a lemonade stand on Lindsay Road on the Fourth of July to raise money for the township's annual fireworks display at Scott Park. J.R.'s mother, Karen Figura, said they wanted to donate to the display to help Ron Ellis, a family friend who sells snow cones at Scott Pool to raise money to pay for the fireworks.

The two boys and three of their cousins from Massachusetts raised a total of $26.88 and gave the money to the township.

"They felt they wanted to help his cause," said Karen Figura, who attended the meeting with Austin's parents, Patrick and Danielle Camp.

The board also recognized the Windsheimer children, who had a lemonade stand on Cardinal Drive in July and raised $117.77 for the library. Andy, 9, Julia, 7 and Jane, 6, beamed as they held their proclamations for their generous deeds.

"Since the library needed money, we combined the two ideas of a lemonade stand and fundraising for the library," Andy said.

The children's parents, Veronica and Bob Windsheimer, and grandparents, Fran and Jack Butchko, all from Scott, came to watch the presentation. They told the library of their plans, which helped spread the word of the lemonade stand. Besides selling the tasty refreshment, the children also offered slushies and cookies.

"They always wanted to do a lemonade stand, so it made sense to do it and raise money for the library," Veronica Windsheimer said. "We are avid users of the library."
