The library’s air conditioning literally blew out earlier this week, causing township officials to scramble for a quick and cheap solution to keep the room cool.

Township officials are concerned that any delay in the repair with a hot September coming would drive away patrons and make the library staff uncomfortable.

“We don’t want them to go without air conditioning,” Commissioner David Jason said.

Initial estimates put a quick fix at $4,000 and a total replacement of the 11-year-old air conditioning system at $10,000.

, though, thought that complete replacement estimate was too high and asked to get immediate bids.

They voted during their Tuesday night meeting to ask various companies to replace the unit at a cost no greater than $7,500. If the cost goes above that level, they decided to just accept the offer to fix the unit’s broken parts for less money.

The repair or replacement could be made by the middle of September.

“It will take them just as long to replace it as it would to fix it,” Commissioner David Calabria said.

The township workers initially thoughts the unit was struck by lightning, but a repairman said the guts of the system had finally worn out. The air conditioning unit was installed in 2001 when the library opened.
