Community Joins Together in Fight Against Cancer

Bridgeville/South Fayette Relay for Life Raised $75,000.

Recent statistics indicate that as many as 1 out of every 3 women and 2 out of every 3 men are diagnosed with some type of cancer. And the lucky ones who aren’t surely have a friend or relative impacted by this epidemic disease.

With those statistics, it’s a constant fight we can’t give up on. But volunteers in our local community are making a difference in the fight against cancer.

was held last weekend at South Fayette High School. With great weather and more than 100 participants, the event was a huge success, donating over $75,000 to the American Cancer Society (ACS).  The traffic wasn’t as heavy as previous years, but the donation will clearly make a difference to an organization that served 55,405 Ohio and Pennsylvania patients last year through the ACS Cancer Resource Network.

There were 17 teams participating with tents, round the clock walkers, food booths, and more. The DJ kept everyone motivated and other entertainment and activities included Myke the Magician, NAMS Karate, musical chairs, and the “Fastest Mile” race was held between local business woman Sara Mohsin and national radio host Glen Meakem.

“Glen won, but I guess I let him (win),” said Mohsin, who also noted that she did a spin class and weight training the morning before the race.

The team Proud Pacers has been participating in the Relay for Life for over 10 years and had an auction to help raise money.  Baskets were made up with items and services donated from families and local businesses.  Shop ‘n Save in South Fayette allowed them to sell tickets prior to the relay at their location.

“It helps to do things ahead of time,” said Rita Black, volunteer for the Proud Pacers team.

Chartiers Valley High School students even started their own team this year: The Cancer Kickin’ Colts. Sophomore Karie Karwowski and junior Gabriel Badali organized the relay team this year and hope it grows in the future.

The event was organized by a volunteer committee from the local community. Kim Lowder and Tanya Brinsky were the co-chairs of this event which was second in the state for their per participant donation last year.  Lowder also organizes the Attitudes for Life team and noted that her decision to volunteer to co-chair the event didn’t have a personal story.

“It’s time to give back,” she said.
