Chartiers Park Ball Fields To Be Rededicated

Bridgeville will rename the two ball fields at the park after two local men who helped build them.

The diligent work by a senior and her family will honor two Bridgeville men for their work in helping to build Chartiers Park.

Bridgeville Councilman Jason Sarasnick said the borough’s parks and recreation board agreed to rededicate the two ball fields in the park after the two men who were instrumental in building them.

The larger field known as Chartiers 2 will be named after Ed Schneider,. The smaller ball field known as Chartiers 1 will be named for Joe Deco, who was a member of the local Kiwanis Club at the time.

Both fields were previously named after the men until heavy flooding in 2004 heavily damaged the park, Sarasnick said.

But it was the work of student Bethany Lakus, who in March as a way to thank him for his service to his country and town. She petitioned and offered to raise money for the initiative as part of her senior project.

Bethany couldn’t be at Monday night’s borough council meeting when Sarasnick announced the decision, but her father, Joel Lakus, spoke on her behalf.

“We were trying to think of an important senior project that would recognize an important person in the community,” he said.

Sarasnick said her suggestion for a sign at the top of the park was thoughtful, but would not be seen by many pulling into the park. He hoped rededicating the fields–along with a plaque naming the numerous others who helped build the park–would be a better way to honor the “founding fathers” of Chartiers Park.

“There were so many people who dedicated their time to Chartiers Park from the beginning,” Sarasnick said, pointing to old newspaper clipping brought to him by resident Deb Colosimo.

Sarasnick said he hoped the new field signs and plaque would be installed before the end of the summer.
