Scott Hosts Little League Baseball Tournament

Numerous games are happening this weekend at Scott Park.

Not long after Scott Township’s 8-year-old All-Stars beat Collier’s baseball team 15-4 Thursday night, kids from both sides were playing in the outfield grass and enjoying their evening.

They all go to Chartiers Valley together, but face each other wearing different uniforms in these all-star tournaments that bring in numerous teams from around the area.

“It’s fun against Collier because those kids go to school together,” said Eric Ives, who coaches Scott’s 8-year-olds. “After the game, they’re out in the outfield playing with each other and throwing the ball.”

Scott Township Athletic Association hosts the tournament all weekend before the championship game Monday night. The biggest games are today when teams from Greentree, Washington, Dormont, Brookline, Cecil and other communities take the field all day.

The eight games today help the local economy and brings a lot of attention to youth baseball, Ives said. Scott Township will play host to the 9-year-old tournament at the end of the month.

“Saturday is an all-day thing,” Ives said. “They're going to be in Scott Township all day hitting up the local restaurants and Walmart. You’ll see pretty big crowds with a hundred people spread around the bleachers and fences.”

The kids in the 8-year-old Coach Pitch League will spend a few weeks during the summer traveling to neighboring communities to play in their tournaments. Ives said it gives them a taste of the Big Leagues.

“They love it,” he said. “They get all-star uniforms with their names on the back and we put their photos on the concession stands.”

Scott Township’s all stars beat Bethel Park Church 12-0 last night, and will play Greentree today and Cecil Township on Sunday.
