Lady Colts Capture Another Track Title

Track teams strings together an undefeated section run.

As if winning three section titles in a row was not enough, the Chartiers Valley girls’ track team won their fourth-consecutive section title this spring with a perfect 6-0 record.

Behind the hard work and leadership of seniors Angie Hartz and Amanda Mazur the Lady Colts had a strong foundation from the beginning. The journey has been a long one for Hartz, who broke her arm as a freshman and came back to become the top 100 meter hurdler (14.87) in the WPIAL this season.

While the Lady Colts lost a lot of experience from last year’s squad, the message was clear early on what they wanted to achieve.

"We all sat down at the beginning of the year and said we wanted to win the section for the fourth-straight season," Hartz said.

The Lady Colts only blemish is a non-section loss to Canon-McMillan, which occurred two months ago. While, the Lady Colts are certainly a contender in the upcoming WPIAL playoffs the future is bright as well.

"We are a very young team,” coach Lori Poe said. “We have the talent to be very strong for the next few years.”

Hartz and Mazur certainly have been through a lot together since they were freshmen, and they think that their hard work has definitely paid off. While, the Lady Colts have certainly thrived as a team this season, their individual success is very evident as well.

The Lady Colts rank 10th as a team in the WPIAL in the 400 meter relay with a time of 51.77. Mazur ranks 9th in the in the 100 meter dash (12.53). The 400 meter dash is dominated by Lady Colt runners as well with Hartz ranking 9th (1.00.08), Dejalynn Peterson ranking 13th (1.01.18), and Mazur ranking 24th (1.02.58).  Hartz also, ranks 5th in the 300 meter hurdles  (47.23).

The Lady Colts will prepare for the WPIAL playoffs and hope to continue the success they have had all season. One key for the Lady Colts in the post-season will be their ability to get contributions from everyone.

"We try to instill a team attitude,” Poe said. “We need for everyone to be willing to run and get points for the team and try to win the relay events which are very important.”
