CV Junior Football Changing Leagues

Move to G19 League will allow for closer opponents and more opportunity for players.

Chartiers Valley Junior Football this fall will move to the Greater 19 Youth Football League with more of their neighboring schools.

The G19 formed in 2000 and includes Bethel Park, Canon-McMillan, Keystone Oaks, North Allegheny, Peters Township, Seneca Valley, South Fayette, and Upper St. Clair school districts. Chartiers Valley previously played in the South Suburban Youth Football League and faced many schools near the city.

“It will be nice to play closer and more competitive schools than we will be playing in middle school and high school,” said Dave Windsheimer, vice president of the CV Junior Colts.

In most age brackets, Chartiers Valley will be able to have two teams, giving kids more opportunity to play. The levels in the G19 league are determined by age, rather than grade. Previously, 6-year olds were not officially part of the program.

Last year, more 200 children played in the CV junior football program, which has been rising every year.

“We hope to see a larger increase in registrations due to this league move,” Windsheimer said.

In addition, the G19 League has a closed borders policy, only allowing children from their districts to play on the teams. This policy is concurrent with that of middle and high school teams and will help the children, coaches, and parents learn to adjust and work with the system, rather than moving to another team.

“This program is based on development for kids of all levels,” Windsheimer said. “I like the system because it gives the kids a better opportunity.”

The move to G19 will also affect the junior cheerleaders program, which had more than 80 girls participating last year. First graders will now be able to register for junior cheerleading, which is divided by grades, rather than ages.

“We will have as many squads as there are football teams,” CV Junior Cheerleaders Director Theresa Strausbaugh said.

Registration for both junior football and cheerleading will start next weekend, and the G19 president will be on hand to meet parents and answer questions. Registrations for football and cheerleading can also be done online at www.cvjrcolts.com.
