Colts Trounce Trinity For First Win

Versatile quarterback Wayne Capers shines in 37-14 victory.

Chartiers Valley senior quarterback Wayne Capers proved to be a triple threat Friday night by scoring three different ways, making Chris Saluga the school’s winningestΒ coach with 54 wins.

Saluga was pleased the Colts bounced back from last week’s dismal loss against the Montour Spartans.

β€œWell obviously there were plenty of mistakes to improve upon from last week,” said Saluga. β€œI challenged our guys to one, improve on our mistakes and two, let’s come out positive and work to get better this week.”

Chartiers Valley did just that as the Colts topped the Hillers, who were plagued by fumbles, 37-14 in Friday night’s competition at Chartiers Valley Stadium. Β 

Capers played a solid gam,e completing 9 of 13 passes for 121 yards and a touchdown. Additionally, he added 35 yards on the ground with a score. Capers also dazzled the home crowd scoring a touchdown on a 79-yard punt return.

After Connor Lindsay’s fumble recovery on a muffed punt, junior running back Joe Ragni drove the Colts down to the 4-yard line. On the next play Capers once again handed the ball off to Ragni who gave the Colts a 10-0 lead with 01:09 remaining in the first quarter.

Chartiers Valley concluded the first half scoring on a Capers connection with senior receiver Juliano Coury of 25 yards putting the Colts up 17-0.

Trinity looked to gain momentum when sophomore running back Pat Frey returned the opening kick of the second half 99 yards for the Hillers first points.

After both teams were unsuccessful on their next drives, Capers returned a punt 79 yards increasing Chartiers Valley’s lead 24-7.

On Trinity’s next possession, junior quarterback Jason Vankirk completed a 55 yard pass to senior running back Brandon Robertson cutting the Colts lead 24-14.

Capers started the fourth quarter with a 33 yard touchdown run making the score 30-14 after a missed extra point attempt.

Chartiers Valley concluded the scoring with a 4-yard touchdown run from junior running back Michael Boulos.

β€œWe played better as a team, were more physical and just improved,” said Saluga. β€œWe were more confident and we responded. Our goal is to just improve each week and I believe we did. β€œNext week the Colts go on the road to compete against Elizabeth Forward.

β€œWe have another conference game at Elizabeth Forward and our goal is to continue to progress, get better and move to 2-0 in the section,” said Saluga.
