Snow Blankets Region (Again)

At least seven inches of snow fell Monday night, causing school closures.

A winter storm that blasted the region with more than seven inches of snow made for slippery road conditions and prompted the closure of many schools.

The Chartiers Valley School District and Our Lady of Grace school in Scott Township both canceled classes for their students Tuesday. The snow storm also caused numerous road delays Monday night and Tuesday morning, while also trapping parked cars behind large snow drifts from passing plow trucks.

Scott police Sgt. Al Ballo said there were a few fender benders and disabled vehicles causing traffic delays on Hope Hollow and Forsythe roads in the township.

“Besides that, everything went smooth,” Ballo said. “A lot of people made sure to get off the roads.”

Collier police Sgt. Robert Ferrence said there were no serious crashes in the township, but suggested residents be cautious when traveling today. Some of the secondary roads still need to be plowed or treated, he said.

“We haven’t had any major catastrophes or accidents, knock on wood,” Ferrence said. “We’re advising our residents to take it easy and use common sense. Let our road crews do their job.”

The weather even forced the Port Authority of Allegheny County to shutdown it's bus service at 10 p.m. Monday, and kept it from starting 25 bus routes this morning. However, the T was operating on its normal schedule and most buses returned to service by 7 a.m.

But the snow should be short-lived as warmer temperatures enter the area.

“Hey, Phil was right on. We’re starting to see more sunlight and this snow is going to start melting pretty fast," meteorologist John Darnley told Canon-McMillan Patch on Tuesday morning. "Spring is right around the corner.”
