Stefko Reinstated as Lady Colts Coach

Chartiers Valley filled its girls’ basketball coaching vacancy with a familiar face.

The school district reinstated Spencer Stefko just three weeks after from the coaching position.

Stefko received an e-mail Monday from Superintendent Brian White informing him that he was rehired as coach.

The superintendent told Chartiers Valley Patch that the decision went into effect Tuesday and the school board would likely approve it at the next meeting. White did not elaborate on the reversal of the original decision to open the coaching position to other candidates.

“He is the coach,” White said.

Stefko admitted the situation has been “strange,” but said he is looking forward to returning to the coaching position after the school year ends.

“It’ll be a neat challenge,” Stefko said. “God, I had missed my kids. But it’s finals week, and I teach three different classes, so the best word might be busy.”

The decision Monday followed three weeks in which on message boards and at last week’s school board meeting.

The school board unanimously voted on May 10 to remove the coach responsible for guiding the Lady Colts to three section titles in the last four years. But the dozens of Stefko supporters who showed up to last week's school board meeting may have had an impact on the administration’s opinion on the matter.

The circumstances around Stefko’s dismissal were secretive, although one source said it centered around with the high school team. Still, dozens of supporters spoke passionately about the coach at last week’s board meeting.
