CV Student Wins Ambassador Award

Chartiers Valley Middle School student Nick May received one of four Luminari Awards and will have a chance to travel to Washington D.C. this summer to meet ambassadors.

A student was named one of the area’s top scholars and will have a chance to attend the first ever “I Want to be an Ambassador!” camp this summer.

Nick May and three other area students received the Luminari Award and a voucher to attend the seven-day camp in June at Heinz History Center before traveling to Washington D.C. to meet foreign ambassadors.

The four students who received the award demonstrated “motivation, open-mindedness and the willingness to learn and be inspired by ‘out-of-the-box’ activities," according to Luminari officials.

“Attending the ‘I Want to be an Ambassador!’ camp is an amazing opportunity for me to further my interest in politics, develop my leadership and social skills and broaden my world view,” Nick said in a written statement. “I am excited to put what I learn at camp to work in my school and community.“

He was helped in the process by Gina Oliphant, who is on the Chartiers Valley Middle School’s Culture and Diversity Colt Team. She said Nick is looking forward to the unique experience.

“The most significant benefit of the Luminari Award and Ambassador Program is that it allows our students to experience a unique opportunity for learning communication skills, sensitivity towards others and a growth mindset at an early age,” Oliphant said.

The camp is open to other local students from eight to 12th grades. The cost is now $895, but rises to $1,200 for anyone who submits their application after May 1. For more information on the program, go to http://luminari.org and download the camp application.

“One goal is to reward students for their noteworthy personal and academic qualities,” said Hilda Pang Fu, who is Luminari’s founder and president. “The second is to honor the dynamic schools and inspiring teachers who support these students.”
