CV School Board Gives Thanks

Outgoing board members and a former administrator all received praise at Tuesday's voting meeting.

The honored outgoing directors and a former administrator, as well as two seniors whose achievements earned them national recognition, during its Tuesday night voting meeting.

Superintendent Brian White also presented a plaque to Dr. Katherine Gori, who retired in 2004 as assistant superintendent. Gori began teaching English in the district in 1970, later becoming director of instruction and curriculum. A duplicate plaque honoring Gori will be placed in .

“She taught me more about education than I ever thought I would need to know,” board President Beth McIntyre said. “And more important, she taught me the value of patience and calmness and the ability to listen.”

Speaking after the meeting, Gori said she was humbled by the recognition.

“Chartiers Valley has a huge place in my heart—and a very warm place,” Gori said. “I’ve always loved this district—tremendous students and tremendous community, tremendous parents—and been blessed with a board that puts kids first.”

Gori spent her entire career in the district. She said she has been enjoying time with her family since retiring and does occasional consulting work with the Pennsylvania Institute for Instructional Coaching, a literacy project.

The meeting was the l Patti Figorski, Patricia Frey, Herb Ohliger and Mary Lou Petronsky—all of whom White presented with certificates thanking them for their service.

Julie Murphy, a member of the Task Force for Academic Excellence, echoed White’s sentiment when she stepped to the podium during the public comment portion of the meeting.

“Community service and volunteering is hard work,” Murphy said.

“We really are extremely grateful for your dedication and hard work over the years,” she added.

The —Robert Kearney, Sandy Zeleznik, Jamie Stevenson and Wendy Huntoon—who won seats in the Nov. 9 election. Petronsky, addressing members of the Task Force, offered advice later in the meeting.

“Listen to your administration,” Petronsky said. “No matter how much you think you know, you do not know it all, OK? And just come in with an open mind and listen.”

Kara Droney, director of communication and strategic partnership, kicked off the meeting by presenting plaques to seniors , who the National Merit Scholarship Program named “Commended Students” this year.

“This is really an impressive honor for them," Droney said.

The school board unanimously passed these following motions...

  • A school board training program costing no more than $6,000, in lieu of participation in state conferences this academic year.
  • After-school tutoring at the Intermediate School that will cost roughly $6,880.
  • Out-of-state training for teachers totaling a maximum of $12,200.
  • Travel expenses of no more than $775 for Assistant Superintendent Dr. Yvonne Hawkins to present at College Board’s Middle States Regional Forum in Baltimore, Md., in late January.
