CV Musical Garners Award Nominations

"Footloose" received four nominations for the Gene Kelly Awards

The Gene Kelly Awards are Saturday night and of “Footloose” garnered four nominations.

The awards ceremony will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Benedum Theater in Downtown Pittsburgh.

Kim McVay, who produced and teaches at the high school, said the night is like a party-atmosphere to celebrate the students’ achievements in fine arts.

“It’s a once-in-a-life time experience,” McVay said. “You’ll see some kids in prom dresses. The atmosphere is unbelievable. To be so proud of what you did and celebrate the arts, there isn’t any awards ceremony in this area quite like it.”

Chartiers Valley received four nominations, which is the same amount as last year.

is competing for best actor honors and Harrison Wayne is up for best supporting actor. If McRory wins Saturday night, he will be sent to New York City for a week to participate in Broadway workshops and have a chance to garner national honors.

“It’s like our version of the WPIAL championships,” McVay said.

Meanwhile, the production crew is up for best scenic design and best lighting design in the Budget Level 2 category. McVay said the budget categories allow schools to compete against productions with similar budgets.

“We’re kind of hopeful this year. You think you have a better chance of winning,” McVay said. “We’re proud of what we did regardless of the results.”
