Students at Chartiers Valley High School paid tribute to the area’s military veterans Friday morning with their annual flag-raising ceremony.

Students read the names of the more than 20 veterans who attended the ceremony while the high school choir sang various patriotic songs. Each of the students, which also included a second grade class from the primary school, waved small flags during the service.

“We are able to enjoy living in this free country, the greatest country in the world, because of their service,” said Dave Harhai, who teaches government studies. “We are in gratitude of their service.”

The veterans who attended Friday’s ceremony are Mark Harhai, Andy Gavel, Santo Magliocca, Rich McElhoes, Ed Stevens, Richard Kouche, Al Robinson, Laura Russell, David Russell, Ed Campbell, Jr., James Garner, Boyd Culp, Curtis Simmons, John Chraska, Leo Chraska, Michael Bonacci, Herman Herleman, John Pielin, Ron Clafshenkel, Larry Carilla and Norm Blocher.
