CV Holding Youth Basketball Tournament

The games kicked off Thursday with 32 teams playing in the basketball tournament.

Thursday night was the opening of the annual Chartiers Valley Girls Basketball Tournament, the first of the season in this area. Travel teams with girls from fourth to eighth grades were invited to participate.

“This year, there are 32 teams participating,” said Doug Cromer, treasurer for the basketball boosters.

They’ve had as many as 40 in the past, but this seems to be a more manageable size. Participating schools include Chartiers Valley, Peters Township, Bethel Park, Canon-McMillan, Trinity, South Fayette, Norwin, and Thomas Jefferson. These teams are from the Metro and Chartiers Valley Travel Leagues.

“We like to participate in this tournament because it’s early in the season and gives us a chance to see how we’re playing and what we need to work on moving forward,” said Jim Cavrak, coach of the Bethel Park seventh grade girls team.  

Games will be held throughout this weekend on Saturday and Sunday and will take place on the courts at the , and . The weekend semi-finals and finals will be held next weekend.

Fourth and sixth grades have the most teams participating with eight each. Seventh and eighth have six teams in their bracket, and fifth grade has four. Each team is guaranteed three games or more if they make it to the semi-finals or finals.

The tournament is run by the High School Boys Basketball Boosters and proceeds will go to the team. Chartiers Valley also hosts a boys tournament for the same age groups held in January each year.
