CV High School Cutting French Fries

The high school will now only offer baked fries.

The new school year brings more than just new teachers, books and classes for high school students; it also brings new changes to their lunch menu.

Chartiers Valley School students will have to adjust their taste buds starting Wednesday, as the district is replacing the fried fries with new baked fries.

“We replaced the fryers as they could not be repaired and for the wellness of the students,” said Susan Kalafatis, the district’s food service director.

The high school is behind the trend; as the other schools in Chartiers Valley already provide baked fries verses fried fries. Additionally, Kalafatis believes other local districts have opted to make similar changes to promote a better diet.

According to Kalafatis, the equipment upgrade is a combination oven which can steam and bake at the same time.

Although, the school is trying to steer the students in the direction to eat better, there is a slight apprehension that the student body will dislike the new fries.

“There is a little bit of concern that students will not enjoy the baked fries,” said Kalafatis. “We tried to find the best baked fry.”

Kalafatis said she tasted the new option last week and said they are good.

“They do not taste bad, it is just something the students will have to get used to,” she said.

Although the district had to replace the fry fryer, the school is still going to offer two of its most popular fried al a carte menu items, provolone sticks and wings.

“We are still going to offer a few fried items as we did not want to shock the entire student body too much,” said Kalafatis.

Kalafatis also mentioned the school did not want to get rid of the most common items as it would decrease sales and have an effect on the budget.
