Even Better...

Here is a better idea...aromatherapy continued.

Was going through some notes and found a mistake.

The "lemon" in my last post should read "lavender". Lemon is energizeing. Lavender is relaxing.

That is the fun part about making your own room fragrance. Not only is it natural and harmless...you can customize it to your own tastes and needs. I love the scent of lemon, and use it a lot.

Even better, aromathearapy is easy when you are simply using it for aesthetics and not any sort of healing properties. The great outdoors usually smells pretty OK and all these scents are from nature, so there is really only one basic rule of thumb when you are making a room scent just for the enjoyment of it...enjoy it.

Use things you like, and the blend will usually turn out to be pleasing as well. Especially if you keep it simple with only one, two or three oils at the most.

Citrus notes are one of my favorites, especially lemon and orange. We have a finished basement, but it is still a basement. So in addition to using light colors and keeping it de-humidified, citrus scent can make it feel less dark and underground, and a more pleasant space to be in.

A blend of orange, lemon, cinnamon, and TINY bit of clove is nice for the main living space, especially in the winter. If you have ever made old fashioned clove hard candy, you know what an eye-watering experience too much clove can be. This is a pretty potent blend, so a little drop will do ya, in a warmer or use a reed diffuser. Use this one with a little caution in homes with asmatic or very sensitive individuals, but for most people is is a nice combination. Not only is it warm, cozy and smells like the Holidays, those fragrances are (by tradition more than science)  thought to give a lift to the immune system during cold and flu season.

The kitchen is back to citrus-y. They make a great everyday cleaning solution with some diluted vinegar. Citrus oils have been used to care for wooden cabinetry for ages. 

Those baby lotion commercials are right on the mark. Lavender is wonderful for night owls that have an early school bus. Vanilla is a nice alternative for boys who might not want their room to smell like flowers. Who doesn't like the scent of cookies?

Bergamot, ylang ylang, or sandalwood give a more sophisticated air of relaxation to rooms used by stressed adults.

So just remember to dilute the oils properly, keep sprays off moisture sensitive fabrics, relax and enjoy custom crafting your own scent-scape.
