Steen Road Bridge Repairs in Question

Collier officials hoping for temporary fix as Trader Jack's Flea Market revs up for business.

Collier Township and PennDOT engineers are researching whether temporary repairs can be made to the Steen Road Bridge as the flea market season revs up at nearby Trader Jack’s.

Collier commissioners discussed a possible temporary fix for the bridge,, during their Wednesday night meeting. But who will pay for any repairs and when they will be made are up in the air.

“We’re trying to push it as quickly as we can, but these things take time,” Board President Bob Schuler said.

Engineers have said blocks could be placed underneath the bridge to give it temporary stability, but regular inspections would be needed to ensure the span is safe. The township and PennDOT recently entered into , but budget cutbacks are delaying those decisions.

“Right now, they’re saying they can’t commit to making permanent or temporary repairs,” Schuler said. “We’ll still have to sit down with them.”

Schuler said they would like to make repairs as soon as possible because of the number of shoppers who use Steen Road to get to Trader Jack’s Flea Market. Motorists currently are using a detour that takes traffic onto Thoms Run Road.

 

Also during the meeting…

-The playground equipment at Webb Park has been removed for safety issues. Meanwhile, the public works department announced that water has been turned back on in the rest rooms in the local parks and that the water fountains will be operating soon.

-Resident Priscilla Tarr complained that smoke from her neighbor’s fire pit is coming into her home. She said she is concerned because she has no air conditioning and needs to keep her windows open in the summer.

-Before closing the meeting, Schuler asked everyone to wish Commissioner Tim Young a happy birthday.
