Scott Township Primary Election

Two candidates are vying for the Democratic nomination for Ward 1 commissioner.

Eileen Meyers is an incumbent Scott Township commissioner running on the Democratic ticket in Ward 1. Meyers has served on the for the past 12 years and was previously board president in 2008-2009.

“My full time job is working for the township,” said Meyers who also works part-time at Christopher’s Flowers in Manor Shops. Her family lives in Glendale and her three children graduated from Chartiers Valley.

Her challenger in the primary is Pat Martin, a lifelong resident of Glendale and an active member of the Scott Township Democratic Committee. Martin was the Judge of the Election on the Election Board for the past 18 years, which has allowed her to meet all of the voters and become familiar with their concerns.

“They speak their mind and I have listened,” she said. It’s time for a change,” she said. “We need some new faces with new ideas.”

Meanwhile, Meyers chairs the Parks and Recreation Committee and she is proud to have started and planned many community activities in the township such as Octoberfest, which is in its 11th year, the Easter Egg Hunt, sled riding, Farmer’s Market, and Movies in the Park.

“I’ve put a lot of time into organizing these activities and I think the community would hate to see them go,” she said.

Her biggest goal on the board currently is to clean up the areas that are in disrepair. She is working on the Tri-Community project with Carnegie and Heidelberg. Meyers also said that the current board works well together and hopes that those that are elected treat the position seriously.

“Now that everything is finalized, but we’re ready to move forward with the design work,” said Meyers.

Martin is frustrated because she thinks the Glendale area needs some revitalization. She also thinks the current board members often discuss ideas but rarely move forward with initiatives. She has attended their meetings on a regular basis for the past 18 years and is familiar with the way things are handled.

“I would work with the other commissioners to get things done and hopefully set a better pace,” she said. “I will listen to others but vote on my own conscience.”

Born and raised in Glendale, Martin was highly involved in sports and the schools while her four children were growing up and she worked at the Intermediate School as the receptionist.  Full of energy to put toward the community, she’s now helping with the Scott Township 150 year celebration.

“We have a lot of history here and we need to share what’s been happening recently as well,” she said.
