Scott Preparing for 150th Birthday

Township is asking residents for ideas on how to celebrate the anniversary.

Scott Township is getting closer to its 150th anniversary and municipal officials are asking the public for ideas on how to celebrate the occasion.

Some plans include burying a time capsule containing items from area students, a 5k run and parade through the township and a re-enactment of the Whiskey Rebellion, township Manager Denise Fitzgerald said.

The biggest portion of the celebration will happen during the township’s community day during the Fourth of July weekend.

-Engineer Ned Mitrovich explained some of the problems the township will face in its plans to install ADA compliant sidewalk ramps at North Wren Drive and Bower Hill Road. The township applied for Community Development Block Grant money to do the work and received preliminary approval. It now has to submit its full plans for the $8,000 project, but any work also requires the township to upgrade traffic signals at the intersection, which is shared with Mt. Lebanon. “It would be very costly if they asked us to do that,” Fitzgerald said about the signals. “We’ll find out this week if PennDOT is forcing us to do that.” The commissioners later decided to approve the construction of ADA curb ramps at two intersections in the East Carnegie neighborhood at a cost of about $4,000 to the township.

-The board is announcing that lifeguard testing for the township pool will be on April 23 at Chartiers Valley High School.

-Commissioner William Wells said he thought the township should delay hiring new municipal employees this year in order to save $165,000. He said that money should be put towards repaving the crumbling roads around the township.

-Chief James Secreet sent a letter of commendation to Sgt. Steve Fury after he helped locate the home of a earlier this month. The girl’s parents were charged with child endangerment.
