Scott Resident Shares Concerns About Recreational Burning

Commissioners plan to discuss the issue at the Aug. 13 meeting.

Most residents who spoke during Tuesday's Scott Township Commissioners' meeting shared concerns about flooding problems, but one resident had an entirely different concern: recreational burning in the township.

Resident Kathy Opiela told commissioners she was concerned about the township's recreational burning laws, and about possible abuses of fire pits in her neighborhood.

Opiela said she became especially concerned about carbon monoxide poisoning as a result of recreational burns after her husband suffered a medical emergency, and she asked about the possibility of banning recreational burning in the township.

Commissioners and emergency officials at the meetings said they would review the problem, but said that the township follows laws and guidelines set by the county to regulate recreational burning.

Commissioner Tom Castello said discussion about the matter will continue at the Aug. 13 meeting.
