School Board Candidate: Tom Galluze

Candidate profile for the upcoming primary election on May 17

Tom Galluze thinks the Chartiers Valley School District is on good financial footing and wants to make sure the taxpayers’ money is spent wisely on education.

“I would like to go over all of the expenditures and contracts,” Galluze said. “Are we spending money unnecessarily in certain areas? If we’re wasting money in one area, then it can go elsewhere.”

Galluze said he has spent his entire career working with school districts and knows intricate details about education budgets. He thinks his experience would be especially valuable following the deep state budget cuts for education.

He called his experience a “perfect fit” for the school board during difficult economic times.

“The tremendous cuts (Gov. Tom Corbett) has put on school districts is where I think I can help,” he said. “Just making sure they aren’t wasting money and putting what they do have available to helping kids.

Galluze, 59, of Scott Township, holds an accounting degree from Robert Morris and does internal auditing for the Allegheny Intermediate Unit. He spent eight years on the Chartiers Valley School Board before losing his re-election bid in 2009.

He pointed to his tenure on the school board in which he kept taxes low. The board did raise taxes by a half-mill last year when he was not a member, but that increase may have helped the district avoid serious cuts in this year’s budget.

Galluze said he is proud of his time on the school board in which he was chairman of the budget committee. The district still has one of the lowest tax rates in the Allegheny County, and Galluze thinks he will be able to “keep a good idea on expenditures” to prevent waste.

“That’s the main reason I’m running again. They are positioned well financially, but that could change rapidly,” Galluze said. “I don’t want them to wasting money on things that could be spend elsewhere.”
