Route 50 Closed For The Weekend

Construction project in Bridgeville will close the roadway near Bower Hill Road

so crews can begin work on the $6.8 million reconstruction project.

If the weather cooperates, the closure near Prestley Road will begin at 8 p.m. Friday and reopen at 6 a.m. Monday as crews work on the railroad trestle. PennDOT is suggesting motorists use Interstate 79 as a detour around the roadwork.

That has municipal leaders and business owners bracing for gridlock around the area. Barry Beggarly, who works at the Antique Shop on Route 50, said the construction might be a problem, but the work is still badly needed.

“What are you supposed to do?” Beggarly said. “You can’t stop progress. If they don’t fix it, it will only get worse.”

He did hope the construction will fix a rain water drainage problem that often overtakes the nearby sidewalks. He said pedestrians stroll most often because it’s hard to find parking spots around the shop.

“There’s a ton of traffic,” he said. “It doesn’t stop. Looks like rush hour all day.”

Nearly 19,000 cars travel on that stretch of Route 50 each day, according to PennDOT.

Bridgeville Borough Manager Lori Collins said the construction is a necessary evil to fix an important roadway through town.

“It’s just something that has to be done,” Collins. “We’ll find a way to get through it.”

There will be upcoming periodic lane restrictions while. The work will repair the road surface while upgrading traffic signals, sidewalks, bridges and guardrails along the 3.5-mile stretch of road.

The work likely will be finished next spring.
