Rope Swing Causing Injuries on Trail

At least two injuries have been reported after people fell from the swing.

A rope swing hanging from a tree just off has caused at least two injuries this year.

The most recent incident happened around dusk Tuesday as a “younger lady” swinging from the rope fell and apparently broke her ankle, Collier police Chief Thomas Devin said.

“Last we heard is she’s fine, except for a broken leg,” Devin told the Collier commissioners during their Wednesday night voting meeting.

Three and firefighters from Rennerdale and Presto placed the woman on an ATV and drove her to an ambulance waiting at one of the trail entrances near Rennerdale.

The rope swing is off Panhandle property, but close enough to the trail where walkers can easily find it. Devin said there was another injury this year, prompting them to remove the rope, although someone apparently re-attached it.

That prompted to ask whether it is Panhandle property or owned by a resident. Regardless, Devin said there isn’t much the township can do if people continue to put the rope swing up after accidents.

“You’d hate to have to cut down a tree just because people are being goofy,” Devin said.
