PennDOT and Collier Plan to Fix Bridge

State agrees to fix Steen Road bridge in Collier in exchange for smaller tasks.

Collier Township and the state Department of Transportation entered into a “horse-trading” agreement last week that could lead to the Steen Road bridge being repaired.

The Collier Township commissioners on Wednesday unanimously approved the agreement with PennDOT that will have the state agency pay to fix the bridge while the township returns the favor by performing smaller road projects on state roads.

because of broken rocker bearings that made the structure unsafe for motorists. The cost to make repairs would have been too high for the township, but PennDOT has the equipment and manpower to do the work.

Township Manager Gary Vituccio said the township already has done several favors for the state. He did not know when the bridge ultimately will be fixed.

“Now we’ll get credit for that work,” Vituccio said. “Usually it’s a pretty fair deal.”

Collier Township’s public works department will perform smaller duties such as hedging or road cleaning to help the state.

“I guess it’s essentially a horse-trading program,” board President Bob Schuler said.
