Murphy Delivers Infrastrcture Grants

Bridgeville and Carnegie each received HUD grants to help with various projects.

Congressman Tim Murphy formally delivered federal infrastructure improvement grants to Carnegie and Bridgeville officials Tuesday afternoon.

The $140,640 grand from the Department of Housing and Urban Development was broken into three pieces that have already assisted in cleaning the borough’s sewer pipes and will help Carnegie repave several streets.

“You don’t think about (the sewer system) until it doesn’t work,” Bridgeville Manager Lori Collins said. “Out of sight, out of mind, until it becomes an issue.”

The $15,640 for Bridgeville was used to give the borough an additional four weeks of the VACTOR truck used to clean the sewers. Collins said the grant allowed the borough to double the normal year maintenance.

“Normally, we can budget only four weeks a year, so it doubled it,” Collins said. “We always need to keep those things open.”

The Char-West Council of Governments solicited the grant and then dispersed it to the two communities. Carnegie received $29,000 to reconfigure Jefferson and Main streets, and an additional $96,000 to repave the Irishtown neighborhood.

Murphy, R-Upper St. Clair, presented the checks to officials from both boroughs at the Carnegie Municipal Complex.
