1.) Today is the last day for property owners in Allegheny County to file formal appeals of their 2013 court-ordered reassessments. Forms must be postmarked on or before today. They also may be taken to one of several collection points today.
“I encourage all property owners to file a formal appeal by Monday’s deadline to preserve their legal rights,” County Executive Rich Fitzgerald said in a statement.
“In fact, I am filing an appeal on my own property because I do not agree with its 2013 court-ordered reassessment value," he said. "Appeals may always be withdrawn, but once Monday’s deadline passes, property owners will have no other recourse to fight their court-ordered reassessments this year.”
Curbside collection points for appeal forms will operate from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. today at the County Office Building, 542 Forbes Ave., Downtown; and the Lexington Technology Center, 400 N. Lexington St., Point Breeze. County employees wearing green vests will collect the forms.
Appeal forms also may be submitted between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. today at the Kane Regional Centers in Glen Hazel, McKeesport, Ross Township and Scott Township. Property owners should follow the signs for “Informal Reviews” and turn over their forms to county employees who are greeting people.
2.) Fitzgerald and County Council member Amanda Green Hawkins also plan to address assessment appeals at a town hall meeting at 7 p.m. today in the auditorium of Community College of Allegheny County’s Allegheny Campus, 808 Ridge Ave., North Side.
Property owners may bring formal appeal forms to the event, where county workers will help them to complete the forms.
Another town hall meeting to help property owners with court-ordered reassessment issues is set for 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 10. Fitzgerald and County Council member Matt Drozd will hold that meeting at Moon Area High School, 8353 University Blvd., Moon Township.
No registration is required for the free sessions. Property owners may attend any session in any community.
