I-79 Lane Restrictions Begin This Weekend

Crews this weekend will begin working on a 4-mile section of Interstate 79 from the Washington County line to the Kirwan Heights exit.

said the $2.6 million project will upgrade signs and guardrails, patch parts of the concrete roadway and repair three overpass bridges that cross the interstate in that area.

Construction crews will begin work Friday at 7 p.m. when northbound traffic is reduced to one lane. Southbound traffic will be funneled into a single lane at 9 p.m. PennDOT expects the restrictions to remain in effect until 11 a.m. Sunday.

PennDOT said overnight and weekend restrictions will continue through November. Meanwhile, long-term single lane closures in which one of three lanes are closed will also occur in mid-September at the bridge locations.

The work, which is being done by Swank Construction out of New Kensington, will be finished by next summer.
