Heidelberg Hires New Police Officer

Heidelberg police welcomed Antonino "Nino" Balsamo as a new part-time police officer.

Antonino “Nino” Balsamo was sworn-in as a new Heidelberg police officer Tuesday night.

Balsamo was hired as a part-time patrolman and replaces outgoing officers Scott Kercher and Rachael Anderson.

Balsamo is currently a police officer in Oakdale and a veteran of U.S. Marine Corps.

“Patrolman Balsamo will be a great addition to our police force and with his experience in community oriented policing, he will be an amazing attribute to our community,” Mayor Kenneth LaSota said during the borough's council meeting.

Heidelberg police Chief Vernon Barkley said that Balsamo will begin field-training with the department next week.

The hiring brings the police department staffing to four full-time officers, five part-time officers and one K-9 unit.
