Heidelberg Council Awards Improvement Grants to East Railroad Properties

Heidelberg Council awarded a number of $1,000 grants earlier this month, for improvements to properties along and near East Railroad Street.

A fresh, new look could be coming soon to properties along Route 50 in Heidelberg.

Earlier this month, Heidelberg Council awarded 12 $1,000 grants to properties along Route 50 as part of the Heidelberg Business District Facade Improvement Program.

According to borough manager Joe Kauer, the program is an initiative of the borough and Mayor Kenneth LaSota to improve the aesthetic of East Railroad Street, the borough's business district, in order to create a more welcoming appearance for the borough and, in turn, help boost economic development there.

Kauer said the matching-grant program is made possible by dedicated funds from the borough's Business District Improvement Fund.

"We are excited to be able to award these facade grants that will truly have a long-lasting impact on the Heidelberg community," LaSota said in a released statement. "Partnered with the public improvements that are under construction as part of the borough's street scape project, these facade improvements will create a health, welcoming and pleasant main street for Heidelberg."

Grants were awarded to the owners of the following properties:

  • 1747 and 1743 East Railroad Street (owner: R. Sembrat)
  • 408 Second Street (owner: J. Clawson)
  • 411 Second Street (owner: J. Kelly)
  • 2000 East Railroad Street (owner: M. Dodd)
  • 1703 East Railroad Street (owner: R. Losego)
  • 1917 and 1913 East Railroad Street (owner: G. Benish)
  • 1707 East Railroad Street (owner: R. Iorio)
  • 1617, 1625 and 1611 East Railroad Street (Steinberger)

The improvements to be made at these various locations include the addition of awnings, repainting building exteriors, new lighting, masonry repairs and new doors and windows.
