Collier Holds Public Hearing on Marcellus Shale

Residents asked for feedback on a natural gas drilling ordinance

People living in Collier were invited to offer feedback on a proposed natural gas drilling ordinance when township officials held a public hearing May 4.

The pending ordinance addresses many aspects that range from noise level at a rig site to where Marcellus Shale companies are permitted to drill. The public hearing will began at 7 p.m. inside on Hilltop Road.

“Right now, we feel we have a pretty good (ordinance),” Commissioner Bob Schuler said. “We know a lot more about (drilling) now.”

Municipal officials have released a map showing where in the companies would be permitted to set up their rigs if landowners allow them to drill. Schuler said and another landowner’s property.

The commissioners added wording that would not allow rigs within 1,000 feet of a school or day care center. Meanwhile, drillers would not be permitted to put their rigs within 300 feet of the Panhandle Trail.

The township has been working on the ordinance for several years. Schuler said 20 people spoke at the last public hearing for the natural gas drilling ordinance.

“We considered those (suggestions) and made some changes,” Schuler said. “This is an opportunity for people to give their views.”
