Collier Close to Revealing Nike Site Plans

Will receive a report on the residents' feedback from the architecture company.

Collier Township is beginning to finalize the community center plans at the Nike Site.

Board President Bob Schuler said the architecture company is nearly done with the report on what citizens want from their new community center park. Schuler said during the commissioners' meeting Wednesday night that the report is turning out well and thinks the park will be “something they’ll use.”

About 70 acres of land on the western side of the old Charles E. Kelly military post is being turned over the township – most likely in 2012 – so it can build a recreation hub for Collier citizens.

The architecture firm, and received feedback from nearly 50 residents. The township still plans to get the residents together again to go over the results of the meeting.

Also during the meeting…

-Collier Township has hired a new code enforcement and zoning officer. Tom Plietz, who has 22 years of experience in the field, will start March 7. The board of commissioners discussed the new hire during the township’s workshop meeting on Wednesday. Plietz replaces Bob Caun, who was recently promoted to director of the parks and recreation and planning departments.

-The township has received a community development block grant of $97,000 that will be used to build ADA compliant restrooms at the Little Kelly Park in the township. The work on the restrooms must be started before August if the township wants to use the money.

-The commissioners agreed to spend $18,203 to have a contractor extend a waterline at Little Kelly Park to connect to a hydrant. The contractor will fix a detention pond at the park.

-The township will hold a health fair that includes CPR training on March 26 at the Charles E. Kelly Community Center. Register for the event by going to rsvp.kirwanfire.com or call 412-221-8382.

-Eleven college interns are vying for an opportunity to work with the township manager and public works foreman. The commissioners are whittling down the list of candidates and will conduct final interviews soon.
