The recent death of Collier Township’s long-time treasurer is prompting municipal officials to reconsider how they collect taxes.

Collier commissioners plan to appoint a new tax collector, who must be a registered voter in the township, within the next two weeks and then deputize a collection company to do the work.

The need for a new tax collector occurred when Judith Astfalk died April 22 after serving as Collier Township’s treasurer for 18 years.

The township plans to enter into a contract with a company that will calculate tax bills, mail real estate tax statements and receive tax payments.

Township officials said the new treasurer will not receive any compensation and the consolidation of the tax collection service could save taxpayers more than $50,000 a year. The entire plan can be found on the township’s website at www.colliertownship.net.
