Bill Peduto, a 1983 Chartiers Valley grad and Scott Township native, announced Thursday night that he is running for mayor.

Bill Peduto, a 1983 graduate of Chartiers Valley High School, announced Thursday night that he is running for mayor of Pittsburgh.

Peduto, 48, grew up in Scott Township, went to the former Foxcroft Elementary and attended Sts. Simon and Jude Catholic Church.

He is expected to challenge incumbent Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, among others, in the Democratic primary next May.

Peduto has been a City of Pittsburgh councilman representing the East End since 2002, but announced earlier this year his plans to leave the seat when his term expires. That decision now paves the way for him to focus on a mayoral run during the Democratic primary.

During his announcement party in the Strip District, Peduto said he hoped to “break the shackles of the rusty old political machine” in the next election.
