A Bethel Park woman suffered a severe head injury Thursday morning when she was run over by a truck in the Rite Aid parking lot in Bridgeville.

Bridgeville police Chief Chad King said the woman, who is in her 40s, was walking from her car to the store around 10 a.m. when she apparently was feeling ill and inexplicably laid down in the parking lot.

A man driving a large pickup truck didn’t see the woman and hit her. He stayed at the scene and frantically tried to get bystanders to call emergency dispatchers after the accident, King said.

“He was so worked up he couldn’t find his phone,” King said.

King said investigators are not sure if she was lying down on the ground or bending over when she apparently suffered her medical condition.

She suffered a fractured skull, has bleeding on her brain and a badly broken ankle, King said. It was not known when she would undergo surgery for the injuries.

Bridgeville police asked investigators from Allegheny County police to assist them at the scene. The area was cordoned off as investigators spent several hours trying to recreate the accident.

King said the driver was cooperative and did not know if he would face charges.

“At this point, it seems like a freak accident,” King said. “But ultimately it’s up to the county (investigators).”

The names of the victim and driver were not immediately released.
