Veteran Officer Receives Annual Award

Scott police named Buzz Devlin as their Officer of the Year.

on Tuesday night honored a 35-year veteran of the force as their Officer of the Year.

The department voted to award Officer Buzz Devlin not long after he retired while spending his entire career in Scott Township.

“Thirty-four years and 11 months, but who’s counting?” he joked after the ceremony with the . “It was by far the best place to work.”

Devlin, 60, recently had foot surgery and is looking forward to some relaxation time on the golf course and with his grandchildren.

“There’s a lot of memorable moments. A lot of them I can’t tell,” Devlin said with a chuckle.

As many police departments start using more part-time officers, Devlin was a relic to a different era in law enforcement.

Scott police Chief Jim Secreet said many new officers now train at the police academy and then are able to use that certification across multiple departments. That wasn’t always the case, and Secreet said he appreciated Devlin’s loyalty through the years.

“He was happy making daytime patrols and did a great job,” Secreet said.
