Driver Seriously Injured in Route 50 Crash

A driver crashed into a utility pole on Route 50 at Vanadium Road shortly after midnight Monday.

A man was seriously injured early Monday morning when his truck slammed into a utility pole on Route 50.

The crash happened in front of right across the street from the , where EMS and fire crews were immediately ready to respond.

Kirwan Heights fire Chief Mark Lewis said the man, who was not immediately identified, was driving west on Route 50 when he crashed into the utility pole shortly after midnight Monday for unknown reasons. His pickup truck ricocheted back into the middle of the road, forcing crews to close Route 50 for about an hour.

“They were right there when it happened,” Lewis said.

Lewis said the man was trapped in the truck and firefighters used the “jaws of life” to free him from the vehicle. He was taken by a Kirwan Heights ambulance to Allegheny General Hospital with moderate injuries.

His identity or the cause of the crash were not immediately known.
