Rash of Thefts Reported at Providence Point

At least nine thefts have occurred at the Scott Township retirement home since late November.

A string of thefts at over the past month are forcing residents to keep a close eye on their valuables.

Residents at the sprawling assisted living facility on Kane Boulevard reported at least nine thefts that include jewelry, silverware, silver plate settings and other items since Nov. 23.

Marilyn Walsh, spokesperson for Providence Point, told Chartiers Valley Patch that workers are “doing absolutely everything we can” to work with investigators and inform residents about ways to protect their property.

“Now that people are aware and police are telling us what to do to figure out what’s wrong, I hope that brings an end to it,” Walsh said.

Scott Township police Chief James Secreet said it’s a difficult situation because officers can’t effectively patrol inside a secured building. In some cases, residents have reported items as stolen that were later found inside their apartment.

However, he added investigators are looking into “several possibilities” with the string of thefts.

“We are following up some leads and investigating,” Secreet said without elaborating.

Walsh said staff members are meeting with Scott Township police officers each day and warning residents to be vigilant.

“We’re doing what we can and doing what is recommended,” she said. “We’re doing everything we can to work with them to end this.”

The theft of a staff member’s wallet dates back to October, although there were almost daily reports of thefts in the first week of December. Walsh said that doesn’t necessarily mean the problem is continuing, but that residents are only now discovering earlier thefts.
