Police Warn of Smash-and-Grab Thefts

At least three thefts have been reported in Great Southern in the past two weeks.

A rash of smash-and-grab thefts at Great Southern Shopping Center is prompting police to issue common sense safety measures to prevent others from becoming victims.

At least three cars parked outside LA Fitness have been broken into in the past two weeks, and items were also stolen from inside another car parked outside nearby Arby’s. Meanwhile, numerous other similar break-ins have occurred in neighboring areas.

Collier police Chief Thomas Devin said there are two simple ways to protect your car and property: Lock your doors and place your purse in the trunk.

“It’s just like at Christmas time,” Devin said. “Don’t leave valuables in the car.”

This epidemic is not unique to Collier Township or Great Southern. Many neighboring areas – including Upper St. Clair and Greentree – are having similar problems.

“This is going on pretty much all over the place,” Devin said.

Still, Devin said a fitness gym is sometimes an ideal target because thieves know people will not be back to their cars for several hours. He suggested people keep their keys and valuables in gym lockers or place purses in the car’s truck so they are not in view of potential scofflaws.

“I know it’s a pain while working out at a fitness center, but you want to have them with you,” Devin said. “And if you put your purses away, there’s no reason for them to break into your car.”

If anyone sees suspicious activity at the shopping center, call the Collier Township Police Department at 412-276-5051
