Police Chase Down Suspected Thief

A Beechview man accused of breaking into cars was caught by police after trying to run away from officers.

Police arrested a Beechview man wanted for several car break-ins around the South Hills after a brief chase along Route 50.

Scott police officers said they saw 44-year-old William Smith trying to break into a car at the Legacy of Dance Studio off Main Street on Feb. 16 and tried to stop him.

He left the scene and went to Great Southern Shopping Center, where Collier police joined the pursuit. Officers followed him over a hillside and were able to arrest him near Interstate 79.

Scott police charged him with criminal mischief, prowling and theft. Collier police charged Smith with flight to avoid apprehension, resisting arrest, receiving stolen property and possessing instruments of crime.

Police said he was also wanted for breaking into cars in Upper St. Clair and Mt. Lebanon.
