PEMA, FEMA to Review Bridgeville Flood Damage on Monday

Bridgeville Borough officials and emergency management crews are working to help residents affected by the July 10 flooding.

Two days after thunderstorms carried more than four feet of flood water into some Bridgeville homes, borough manager Lori Collins said officials and emergency crews will work through the weekend to help residents deal with the mess.

The borough's public works crew and outside emergency management agencies are using the council chambers in the borough building as a meeting place to gather information before heading to the hardest-hit areas.

"I'm very emotional today. This is an emotional day," Collins said. "To talk to these people and see their homes, see what they lost and what they're having to deal with is just heartbreaking. We're trying to do everything we can to help the residents, but unfortunately we can't replace their things."

Collins is compiling a list of residents who might need Red Cross assistance, and providing that and other information about the situation to the Red Cross and to county offices.

Several agencies are expected to visit the area over the weekend and into next week.

Collins said the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency (PEMA) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) both are expected to tour the Baldwin Street area on Monday.

She said PEMA and FEMA will then determine what to provide to residents and to the borough after reviewing the damage—the borough has very little say in what those agencies will provide.

"They make decisions about what to provide," Collins said. "We make sure we take them to all the affected areas so they have all the correct info, and can see what people are really going through."

The Red Cross is expected to deliver cleaning kits to residents in the Baldwin Street area on Friday, July 12, and Collins said Congressman Tim Murphy and his staff will be in the area this weekend, likely on Sunday.

The borough's public works crew will work through the weekend, and is co-ordinating with Waste Management to provide and replace dumpsters in the Baldwin Street area as needed.

Residents with emergencies should call 911—those who need assistance for non-emergency situations should call the non-emergency dispatch number, 412-279-6911.
