Police Identify Western Psych Gunman

A man walked into Western Psych in Oakland around 2 p.m. Thursday and opened fire, killing one and injuring seven others. The guman also died in the gunfire, apparently killed by a University of Pittsburgh police officer.

At a press conference Friday afternoon, Pittsburgh police identified the gunman as 30-year-old John Shick of Pittsburgh. They said they're still working to establish a motive.

The seven wounded people are expected to survive the injuries they sustained when the gunman, who has yet to be identified, entered the lobby of Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic of UPMC. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is reporting that the deceased shooting victim is Michael Schaab, 25, of .

According to a UPMC press release, five patients—including two who underwent surgery—were being treated at UPMC Presbyterian, and two have been treated and released. One had an injury not related to a gunshot wound. Police officials have not yet released the names of the injured, who included UPMC employees and a hospital visitor.

“I expect all of these patients to survive and do well,” said Donald Yealy, M.D., chair of emergency medicine at UPMC.. “As the busiest trauma center in the region, we prepare for this kind of multi-casualty situation.”

Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl confirmed two people were killed and said one of the deceased men was the shooter. Pittsburgh police believe one gunman entered the building with two firearms, he said.

The ages, genders and conditions of the patients treated at UPMC Presbyterian are as follows:

• 46-year-old male, gun shot wound,  fair condition
• 64-year-old female, gun shot wound, serious condition.
• 54-year-old female, gun shot wound, fair condition.
• 35-year-old male, gun shot wound, fair condition.
• 49-year-old male, gun shot wound, serious condition.

Care of patients was not compromised as events unfolded, said Claudia Roth, Ph.D., president and chief executive officer of WPIC. Additional staffing has been arranged, and many staff members volunteered to work extra shifts. All security procedures will be reviewed in the coming days.

“The safety of our patients, visitors and staff is of utmost importance,” Dr. Roth said.

Jeffrey Romoff, president and chief executive officer of UPMC, praised the "work, professionalism and prompt response" of first responders.

"(We are) deeply, deeply saddened by today's events," he said. "I want to express our deepest sympathies to the victims."
