Employee Shot at South Fayette Gun Shop

Victim in attempted robbery is in good condition at Allegheny General Hospital.

Police are continuing to searching for the armed man who shot an employee at a South Fayette Township gun shop Wednesday morning.

South Fayette police said an employee was shot at at 5035 Thoms Run Road not long after the gun shop opened at 10 a.m. The road was shut down while officers from numerous area departments swarmed the area and searched for the shooter.

South Fayette police Chief Louis Volle identified the victim as 64-year-old John Lukachyk. The South Fayette resident is currently at Allegheny General Hospital in good condition with wounds to his hand and shoulder.

“He didn’t know the shooter,” Volle said. “We think it was a botched robbery attempt.”

Police described the shooter as a white man in his mid-50s with gray hair and a goatee. Police think the man may have left in a tan Ford F-150 or an Oldsmobile Eighty-Eight. Investigators are reviewing surveillance video to see if they are able to better identify the shooter.

Both South Fayette and Chartiers Valley high schools were locked down briefly as a precautionary measure for faculty and staff inside. Students were not in either building because the school year is over for both districts, but there were day camps with children inside at the time.
