Elderly Motorist Crashes Into Kmart

The 83-year-old Castle Shannon man had failed an eye exam and two driving tests in the past month.

An elderly motorist who apparently failed at least two driving tests in the past month crashed into the front of .

said Eugene Falvo, 83, of Castle Shannon, drove straight into the big box retailer in Chartiers Valley Shopping Center shortly before 8 a.m. Friday.

Witnesses told police the man never used the brakes or tried to turn away from the concrete exterior. He was confused and disoriented when police arrived on the scene.

“He had no idea where he was,” Collier police Officer Bill Oslick said. “He was confused.”

He said Falvo was taken by ambulance to with minor injures.

Police said the man had failed an eye test and two driving tests in the past month and was supposed to be re-tested again. Police are not sure if Falvo was going to the PennDOT driver's license center, which is across the parking lot from Kmart, to be tested again Friday morning.

A corner area of the clothes section was crumbled and Kmart workers had cleared merchandise from the point of impact. Yellow police tape surrounded the area, although it didn’t appear to bother customers milling around the store.

“Thank goodness it was early enough so there weren’t many customers around,” Oslick said.

ED, you should start a petition to change the state laws regarding drivers license re-testing. Our legistators in Harrisburg respond to any group of constituents who show they have strength in numbers and are persistent. Regarding K-Mart, Sears Holding - like most big box chains - has had some trouble during the latest economic downturn. So they are closing 3% of their stores - how is 3% a 'death spiral'? I think they will do just fine in the long run. FYI Mike, the Bridgeville KMart is doing fine and will stay open (my daughter works there part-time so I had some inside information).

Mrs. McNulty... While waiting in line at Kmart the other day, I overheard that it's going to remain open. I'm glad because I really like that shopping center. Hopefully the Giant Eagle there will also survive the challenge from the Market District at Newbury Market.

Eugene Falvo told WPXI’s Cara Sapida that he was driving to the DMV’s practice lot next to the pet store. He also told WPXI that he plans on turning over his license to PennDOT.

No one really knows what is going to happen to Sears/Kmart, but things don't look good. Ever since the merger they have only gone downhill with 2011 being particularly abysmal. Christmas sales at both Sears and Kmart were particularly poor this year. They are a very large presence in retail and own a lot of property so even if they file they're likely to emerge again as something. Even so, with the rise in ecommerce, its going to be a challenging for anyone in retail.

"ED, you should start a petition to change the state laws regarding drivers license re-testing."...I admit I don't really know what the retesting procedures are. They may just need a bit of tweaking. Senior citizen advocacy groups are probably, rightly, concerned that the Legislature will use an axe instead of a scalpel. The elderly actually don't have a bad record compared to other groups. Of course, on average, they drive fewer miles in places they are familiar with and drive less after dark, during inclement weather and during rush hour, than other groups.
