Driver Who Crashed Into Tanker Truck in Bridgeville Charged with DUI

A Cecil Township man is being charged with DUI and other crimes after he crashed into a tanker truck Friday afternoon, causing lengthy delays in Bridgeville.

Devin D. Carter, 38, was arrested minutes after the crash along Bower Hill Road on Feb. 8 after Bridgeville police officers said they spotted him walking away from the scene.

Investigators said they believe Carter was under the influence of drugs when he crossed the centerline and crashed into the side of the tanker. The truck’s fuel tank ruptured, spilling diesel onto the roadway, although the used motor oil it was transporting did not leak, police said.

Police said Carter failed a field sobriety test and claimed to be “still recovering from a hangover from the Super Bowl” even though the game was five days before. Investigators said he was sluggish and had trouble keeping his eyes open while talking to the officers.

He was taken to St. Clair Hospital for blood tests so investigators can determine if drugs were in his system. Carter already faces charges of driving under the influence of a controlled substance, careless driving and prohibited acts.

The crash Friday afternoon caused Bower Hill Road near McLaughlin Run to be closed for nearly two hours while police investigated and firefighter cleaned up the leaking fuel. The driver of the tanker truck was not seriously injured in the crash.

IF I GET INSURANCE ON MY HOME AND SET FIRE TO IT, THE INSURANCE CO WILL NOT PAY FOR ANY DAMAGE. NOW IF I GET INSURANCE ON MY CAR AND DRIVE DUI AND HAVE AN ACCIDENT THEY WILL PAY EXCEPT FOR THE DEDUCTABLE. TO MANY PEOPLE DRIVING WITH OUT REGUARD FOR OTHERS.THE PRICE FOR DUI MUST NOT BE A DETURENT. RAISE THE COST.

Nah, Jaun, the penalties are far too weak for drunken driving. The outcomes have very little impact on decisions. The beat just goes on and on. We hear outcries of other topics that claim lives, with the loss of life far, far less, "... we have got to do something to stop it." Meanwhile, every day, an average of 28 people in our country loose their lives because of drunken driving. And dozens are injured every day for the same reason. Yea, yea, ... I hear those who say, "Not as many people are being killed as a few years ago." That may be true, but 17,000 per year is not enough to get much attention. Remember, a drunken driver is on the road while drunk an average of 78 times before getting stopped. The number of times before a death must be huge. Why? I believe we, as a society, are unwilling to take action. Those in authority to make changes don't want to touch the politically sensitive issue. It hits way too close to home (how many politicians are caught, or cause mayhem). I suggest: First offense, impound the vehicle for six months, second offense, impound for one year, third offense, impound for two years. Stop with the excuses about "need the car for work," "hardship on the family," etc. It is those close to the offender who are in the best position to effect behavior change. They need to bear, in part, the effect of the actions, and help make behavior change.
