Classic Car's Fuel System Possible Cause of Heidelberg Fire

An initial investigation showed the faulty fuel system of a 1955 Chevy Bel Air might have caused a fire at a Heidelberg garage on Sunday.

An initial investigation showed that a classic car's faulty fuel system might have been the cause of a fire in a Heidelberg garage on Sunday.

Heidelberg Volunteer Fire Department responded just before 4 p.m. to a report of a garage fire in the rear of 420 First Street, facing the 400 block of Short Way.

A vehicle was inside the garage, and there was heavy smoke in the area. Fire Chief Joseph Wissel said the vehicle was extinguished within four minutes and removed from the garage.

Crews kept the fire from spreading to the structure but Wissel said the vehicle—a fully-restored 1955 Chevy Bel Air—was a total loss.

Wissel said the Allegheny County Fire Marshall was called to the scene because the loss totaled greater than $50,000.

Glendale Volunteer Fire Department assisted. No injuries were reported.
